Kids, Parents and Educators Have a Lot to Say About "The Adventures of Lollipop"!

“Thank you for coming to my school and visiting my class. I really enjoyed when you read us your Lollipop stories. I think you are a very good writer. My favourite was the Adventure[s] of Lollipop. I really liked when Lollipop drank the potion and turned into a dragon from the Medieval times story... Hopefully you will visit our school again, to read some more of your stories.”
- Kitwana H., Grade 3 student
"Your drawing[s] are so good. I like your text[s] they are very interesting... Your books are fantastic. I like your websit[e]. Wow I did not know that you started writing when you wer[e] 9 years old. That was [pretty] awesome."
-Stephanie K., Grade 3 student
"A wonderful presentation of artwork with kids along with a great story! Ms. Cuthbert Lam is not only a great teacher but also a great anchor. Very good understanding with kids!"

“We would like to thank you for visiting our school. Thank you for making the time to visit our library and read us some of your books. We really liked the story you wrote about the Lollipop and the Leprechaun’s Pot of Gold. Thank you for teaching us how to draw the characters Brian and Fraser. Please come to visit us again when your new book is completed.”

"As a Teacher Librarian and Special Education Teacher, I know how our children deserve the most real and engaging education in school that we can provide. With an increasing English Language Learner population and indications that boys’ literacy is declining, specific genres and texts are necessary to engage and develop interest in reading and literacy in our schools.
It has been with pleasure that on numerous occasions, Jennifer Cuthbert has provided author visits to St. Stephen School in Brampton. I have arranged and enjoyed her author’s visits and assisted with the selling of her books in the school. With her engaging and unique style of illustration and diverse settings in her Lollipop books, she has sparked the interest of the most reluctant of readers. Her books provide a variety of settings that make connections to the target audiences and provide some understanding of the differences in cultures, which helps to develop respect for diverse people. In addition, her books are easy reads with their graphic fiction style. This alone beacons the reader to a good read especially boys and reluctant readers.
Ms. Cuthbert’s author presentations have entertained Grades 1 to 8 and the adaptability of the presenter and the texts to a wide age range is remarkable. Junior and Intermediate students are keenly interested in the illustrations, the career choice of the author and the traveling characters in the texts. Primary and Junior classes enjoy the humour and endearing characters as well as the artwork.
I highly recommend the Lollipop series of books by Ms. Cuthbert and as always, our students look forward to more adventures in her graphic fiction style."

“For the past couple of years, Jennifer Cuthbert has come to my class to do a presentation for my grade three students. During these presentations, Jennifer engaged my students in listening to and reading the Lollipop books. The two books presented were “Lollipop’s Canada: Coast to Coast” and “Lollipop In and Out of This World.” Both books connected to our Social Studies, English and Art Curriculum. During her visit, Jennifer assigned character roles to my students and had them read the comic aloud. They loved making the story come alive like this. Also, she taught them how to draw some of the characters from her series. The students were very interested to hear Jennifer speak about where she got her ideas from and the process of getting her work published. After the presentation, the students were inspired to write and draw their own comics. It was wonderful to see some of my reluctant writers creating their own comic strips. The students enjoyed the presentation and learned a lot from it. The Lollipop books are popular pieces of reading material in my class and my students look forward to Jennifer’s visit each year.”

“Our grade one to three students at St. Josephine Bakhita had the pleasure of welcoming author Jennifer Cuthbert. During her interactive presentation, Jennifer shared her journey as an author and illustrator with the students, explaining how she generated ideas for her books, developed the characters, and created the illustrations. The students especially enjoyed her tutorial on drawing their favourite characters. Jennifer is an excellent presenter who easily adapts her material to her audience. Jennifer’s Lollipop series of comic books reflect several areas of the current social studies and science curriculum and are well loved by our students.”
- V. Elizondo, Teacher
“Our class has had the privilege of having Ms. Jennifer Cuthbert as a guest artist/author recently. I have seven developmentally delayed students in my class. The staff and students in my class thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Cuthbert’s visit. She read a story ‘Lollipop in Space’ from one of her books, ‘Lollipop: in and out of this World’ and engaged our students in a Reader’s Theatre activity. The highlight of her visit was when Ms. Cuthbert illustrated two of her characters, step by step and the students followed her instructions and drew ‘Crusher’ and ‘Fraser’ individually along with her.
Ms. Jennifer Cuthbert is a talented artist and a great storyteller. She took into consideration the varied needs and capabilities of my students and planned the activities accordingly.
The fact that she has three published books to her credit at such a young age is truly an accomplishment and is a tribute to her hard work, perseverance and talent.”

As Principal of two different schools in Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, I have had the opportunity to have Jennifer visit and spend quality time with our students and staff. Specifically, I had Jennifer for "The Adventures of Lollipop" author presentations at my schools for several years in a row, both at St. Stephen and St. Cornelius with Primary and Junior classes. I have been so impressed with each and every author visit. I frequently recommended Jennifer’s presentations and books to many other schools in Dufferin-Peel. The books have been extremely popular in both the school libraries and the primary and junior classroom libraries. The students really enjoy the books and their comic book format, especially boys. In my professional opinion, these books are extremely educational and the stories support the Language Arts (reading different types of texts and text features), Social Studies (travelling to different countries of the world, learning about different cultures, and travelling across different regions of Canada), and Visual Arts curriculum (comic books). I have been very impressed in seeing students reading the stories and actually taking on the role of a character, creating sound effects for the stories, as well as learning to draw some of the characters.
Jennifer truly inspired hundreds of students to read, become writers, and create their own comics and cartoons. My hope is that other educators, parents and children will have the same opportunity to experience all the great ‘Lollipop’ books and the benefits that each book brings.”
